The Waterbury Career Academy High School is a scholastically challenging high school designed for excelling students who have a desire to pursue college and career readiness through one of four career pathways/academies including Health Services, Education and Training, Information Technology and Engineering, and Manufacturing. The high school, which opened during the 2013-2014 school year, is housed with students who are Waterbury residents in grades 9 - 12. Students who have been accepted into the school completed an application and were accepted through the rank of their application.

You are invited to learn more about WCA in-person at our Open House on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm.


QUALIFICATIONS:
All Waterbury residents and students in grade 8 qualify to complete the online application.

HOW TO APPLY:

You must be a Grade 8 Waterbury Resident.

* Complete and submit the Application. You have from September 25, 2025 - December 5, 2025, at 11:59 pm to complete the application. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.  

*The application includes: 
 

Student/Parent Section:

  • Completed Student Section: Demographics, Academy interest, list of clubs/extra-curricular activities, student written essay Identify one element of the Portrait of a Graduate and describe how the academy you choose at Waterbury Career Academy High School will benefit you in your future success. 
  • Completed Parent Section: demographics and authorization of the release of records.
  • ONE academic teacher recommendation from one of the following subjects: language arts, reading, social studies, math or science (student is to inform the teacher they chose that they will be required to complete a teacher recommendation).

School counselor will provide supporting documents for review: 

  • Copy of Grade 7 report card and Quarter 1 Grade 8 report card (English, Math, Social Studies, Science & Reading grades are evaluated).
  • Complete Attendance Record (Excused & unexcused) for 7th Grade and 1st Marking Period of 8th Grade.
  • Discipline report for grade 6, 7 and grade 8 (submitted by current school counselor).
  • Grade 7 Smarter Balanced Assessment (IF APPLICABLE) as reported on the Student Score Report or comparable standardized assessment such as the IOWA tests (submitted by current school counselor).

Admissions Process and Procedures: Each of the above factors is reviewed by a selection committee that are staff outside of Waterbury Career Academy. Students will receive a letter on their status of application mid-February.

Final student placement will be determined based on the alignment between each student’s individual needs and individualized education plans. Specialized programs that require a specific setting for language acquisition and/or special education needs are present throughout Waterbury Public Schools, but may not be available at Waterbury Career Academy.
